Troops Rescue 33 Abducted Passengers in Zamfara

ZAMFARA, Nigeria — Nigerian troops have rescued 33 passengers who were abducted by terrorists in Zamfara State, in the latest security operation against kidnapping and armed attacks in the North-West.

The rescue was carried out by troops of the Joint Task Force North-West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, following information about the abduction of commuters travelling through the Magazu area of Tsafe Local Government Area.

According to reports published on Monday, August 10, the troops received information about the incident on Saturday and moved to the area to locate the abducted passengers.

Troops Engage Terrorists

During the operation, the troops encountered the terrorists and engaged them in a gun battle.

The military response reportedly forced the attackers to abandon the abducted passengers and flee into nearby bushes.

All 33 victims were subsequently rescued, according to reports from multiple Nigerian news organisations and the Associated Press.

The rescue operation involved security personnel operating in the Tsafe area, where kidnapping and other forms of armed violence have continued to pose security challenges.

Security Forces Continue Search for Attackers

Although the passengers were rescued, the attackers escaped into the surrounding area.

Security forces are continuing efforts to track down those responsible for the abduction and prevent further attacks in the area.

The latest operation comes amid continued security concerns in Zamfara and other parts of Nigeria's North-West, where armed groups have carried out kidnappings and attacks on communities and travellers.

The Associated Press reported that Zamfara has experienced a surge in killings and abductions in recent months.

Another Rescue Reported in Edo

The development also comes as security agencies reported another rescue operation in Edo State.

The Guardian reported that joint security forces rescued 34 victims in separate operations, including the 33 passengers in Zamfara and one person in Edo. The operation also resulted in the recovery of ₦1.5 million reportedly intended as ransom in the Edo case.

The latest successes highlight the continued efforts by Nigerian security agencies to respond to kidnapping incidents and rescue victims before ransom payments are made.

For the 33 passengers rescued in Tsafe, their safe recovery brings relief to their families while security agencies continue efforts to identify and apprehend those behind the attack.
